Greetings from Olkhon Island, Lake Baikal! We arrived here yesterday after two days and two nights in the train and some six hours in a minivan. The train from Ulan Bator, Mongolia was in the end the best alternative even though the 700 km journey took us 36 hours. We had a four hour stop at the border where we had the firstt Borsh soup and Maijas name day coffee and pulla ;).
Everyone recommended to take the bus to Russia, because the passport controls are faster, but a 10 hour bus ride after three days in Bimbas bouncy car didn´t really feel like an option any more. The roads are very bad in Mongolia. The minivan ride to Olkhon island wasn´t any better and we missed Bimba a lot as the russian driver drove full speed to every bump.
We will stay on this island for three nights. We are planning to camp the last night and then continue back to Irkutsk for two nights. We have train tickets to Yekateringburg for the evening of the 8th of July. The internet is charged per hour here, so we might get back maybe in Irkutsk again.
The landscapes are amazing here and we have full sunshine!
Hyvää Ullan päivää!
